Details:
This year, designer Sadie May Stowell took on three ‘Great Gardens Of The USA’ gardens for RHS Hampton Court, each with a completely different style and design.
The Oregon Garden
Awarded
Silver-Gilt Medal
The garden took inspiration from the state’s natural landscape, which includes mountains, scenic gorges and a buzzing wine industry. The garden’s waterfall, a strong focal point of the design, was constructed by the largest boulder, weighing in at almost 4 tonnes.
At 98,000 square miles, the western state of Oregon has a diverse landscape, ranging from rain forests in the Coast Range to barren desert to the South, represented in Sadie’s planting scheme.

The Austin Garden
Awarded
Silver-Gilt Medal
The ‘Great Gardens of the USA: The Austin Garden’ took inspiration from the landscape of Austin, Texas and incorporated locally found materials such as corten steel and sandstone heavily in the design, helping to give it that authentic Austin feel.

The Charleston Garden
Awarded
Silver Medal
The ‘Great Gardens of the USA: The Charleston Garden’ took inspiration from the “hidden gardens” of Charleston. These ‘secret’ gardens were influenced by American landscape architect Loutrel Briggs who, using native plants, developed flourishing, verdant gardens which were structured in such a way to lead visitors to a focal point, such as a water fountain or sculpture.
Sadie incorporated characteristic elements to her design including wrought iron gates, to give visitors the feeling that they are getting a glimpse into these renown hidden gardens.
